GNYC PLA Requirements


Pathfinder Leadership Award

Greater New York Conference of the Seventh-dayAdventistChurch

Adventist Youth Ministries Department

Pre-Requisites

A.Be a Master Guide.

B. Have a Pathfinder Basic Staff Training Course certificate.

C.Be an active Pathfinder staff member.

D.Be an active Adventist Youth (AY) class curriculum instructor.

E. Be an active Master Guide in your local conference for a minimum of two years.

Attendance Requirement

____Attendance Record of 85% of the 24 total course hours. No credit will be given for a workshop if you are more than 15 minutes late.

_____Requirements apply from the GNYC Adventist Youth Ministries Master Guide Passport and/or offical website.

Seminars and Workshops

Develop skills in Pathfindering by attending the scheduled minimum hours of these seminars and workshops conducted by conference designated instructional staff. The official Summary of Requirements for each, and related exercises must be included in the binder.

____Team-Building Skills ( 3 hours)

Goal-Setting; The Planning Process; Motivating Volunteers.

____Personal Improvement (2 hours)

Know Your Temperament; Finding Your Purpose; and Conflict Resolution.

____The Development of Faith in Pathfinder Growth ( 1 hour)

Pre-Adolescent Growth Patterns; What Makes Adolescents Tick; Discipleship

Through Mentoring.

____Discipline (1 hour)

Understanding Discipline; Effective Discipline; Christian Discipline.

____Current Issues (1 hour)

Family Violence; AIDS, Child Abuse; Preventing Youth Violence; Teen & Drugs;

Smoking and Your Hear; Drinking and Your Heart.

____Camp Planning & Programming (4 hours)

Introduction to Camping; Hiking, Backpacking; and Other Forms of Camping; Campsite

Arrangement; Environmental Impact, Sanitation; Fires, First-Aid Kites, Safety and

Rescue; Cooking, Menus, Equipment, and Edible Wilds; Wilderness Techniques and

Survival; Orienteering; Sabbath Schedule and Activities; Cold Weather Camping.

____Pathfinder & Community Ministry (3 hours)



What is Pathfinder Ministry; AY Class Curriculum Applied to Ministry; You Too Can

Witness or choice title.



____Resource Materials (2 hours)

People, Printed Media, and Internet.

____Drill and Pathfinder Ceremonies (2 hours)

Commands; Individual Drill; and Basic Club Drill; Guidon Drill; Flag Customs and

Procedures; Program Ceremonies; and Advanced Drill.

____Outdoor Education (3 hours)

Concept of Outdoor Education; Nature Awaremess; Spiritual Applications of Nature

____Recreation (2 hours)



Philosophy of Recreation; Types and Guidelines for Christian Recreation; New Games

and Sports.

In-Service Training



A .AY Class Curriculum Instructor. Serve as an active AY Pathfinder class curriculum instructor; from which two or more Pathfinders are invested during the same year as the Pathfinder Leadership Award recipient. Choose 1 AY class.

B. Rustic Camping. Within 9 months, prior to investiture, plan and lead a two-nights stay rustic camping trip with your pathfinder class or unit; a minimum of 5 and no more than 8 in your group. The action plan is due prior to the trip and the final report must be included within your binder.



C. Honor Enrichment. Complete the following honors and pre-requisites not previously earned. The honors must be included within your binder.

D. Goals - During your involvement as a staff member in the local Pathfinder Club, select any two areas and demonstrate those skills in the Pathfinder club. Submit the requirements on the Goal Action Form. Goal action forms must be included in the binder.

Personal Growth

A. Read the Encounter Series and the following books:

____AY Encounter Series II, Christ the Church

B. Write a 2-page reaction for each:

____ Book on self-esteem or adolescent development

____ The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey, Stephen

C. Develop a personal skill through reading, taking a course on-line, DVD, or joining a specialized club.

____New skill developed

D. Participate in a physical fitness plan for a minumum of 90-days and evaluate your progress. Include the 90-day fitness journal in your binder.

E. Hold a current American Red Cross Community CPR certification or its equivalent.

____Current CPR Certfication

All of the Personal growth requirements must be included within your binder.
